Define Safe Drinking Water
Mood:  sharp
Now Playing: LESSON #1 Canadian Drinking Water
Topic: Summer 2005
WALKERTON did what? Is it fair to say that Walkerton, year 2000, [7 dead, 2500 seriously ill due to E.coli contaminated municipal drinking water] scared the public and the public demanded better security and safer drinking water regulations? Government of Ontario was elected in 2003 on the promise of 'SAFE + CLEAN DRINKING WATER' for every citizen. Good, where is it and what is it? DEFINE 'SAFE'? Could we assume that the majority of Canadian's would define 'SAFE DRINKING WATER' as any water, any human in Canada may drink from any public tap, anytime and anywhere without risk of sickness, disability or death? Would you agree if we extend that definition to include any tap water used for any domestic, school, drinking water at business, or restaurant etc. including hygiene, cooking, drinking and running through the sprinkler on a hot day? SORRY THAT IS NOT WHAT THEY MEAN BY 'SAFE'! 'SAFE' means the treated drinking water complies with the legislation and regulation for the treatment and subsequent distribution of that water from any treatment facility or plant to any public consumer. The legislation and regulation are provincial NOT federal. They are legislated from Health Canada's 'Guideline for Canadian Drinking Water Quality'. Health Canada state they prepare the scientific research and provide the province with parameters for legislation of the treatment of water 'recipe'. This scientific research is determined by hypothetical apportioning of X milligrams of any parameter [chemical, toxin, bacteria, mineral] in one litre of 'treated drinking water'. The sample human hypothetically consumes this water and IF not sick then the X milligrams establishes the 'outer limit' or 'MAC' [Maximum Acceptable Concentration] of - that - parameter and then on to the next, next etc. OK, so who is the human test person? 'MAC' the human is - adult - in good health - weight 154 lbs. ARSENIC The 'MAC' is 0.025 milligrams per litre of drinking water, at one time [mg/L] - therefore the adult in good health, weight 154 lbs. 'can' consume 0.025 mg/L of Arsenic and not experience negative health. But this adult, at this time is pregnant. What happens to the Fetus when that Fetus consumes his/her portion of that 0.025 mg/L of Arsenic in drinking water? CHLORINE The 'MAC' is equal to or less than 250 mg/L. Journal of Medicine has published a report and Health Canada references this report stating Chlorine produce a by-product [THM's] known to cause miscarriage, bladder cancer and possibly colon cancer. [THM's are legal in Canada's drinking water]. Some family just lost a child to THM's but they don't even know what a THM is or what it can do or how to prevent it? It's legal - what can Mom do? LEAD/MERCURY MAC for LEAD is 0.01 mg/L and MERCURY is 0.001 mg/L. Anything equal to or less than is LEGAL and DEEMED 'SAFE DRINKING WATER'. 'WHO' [World Health Organization] states both LEAD and MERCURY impact the FETUS at 12th. week gestation. The fetus absorbs LEAD and MERCURY and does not excrete it. At birth the Fetus has accrued levels of LEAD + MERCURY. LEAD is a cause of Attention Deficit Disorder/Aggression and Kidney problems and MERCURY is virtually unknown to the medical profession however is known to cause developmental problems in new borns. The list continues but you can read the details on Health Canada website. SAFE SUDDENLY TAKES ON A NEW MEANING! When politicians advise you that your taxes will increase substantially such that your community receives 'SAFE + CLEAN DRINKING WATER', they only mean the water will be 'in-compliance' with legislation and regulation NOT "SAFE" as in no threat to the health of your children. To submit the proposition that a child can absorb the contaminant load of an adult in good health is absurd yet that is Health Canada's proposition and that is legislation and regulation for every water operator in Canada. To conclude this is safe based on one parameter at a time is absurd given every body of water in Canada used for drinking water contains multiple chemicals, minerals and disease bacteria in every litre - not removed at the treatment plant. What happens when one child consumes a multitude of 'MAC' legal contaminants in drinking water from 12th. week gestation to 6 yrs. of age and starting school? To 18 entering university? To 25 and giving birth to a child then passing on the chemical content of the Mother and Father? Scientific community has responded and has expressed their dismay at this water treatment "logic". Their reference is "not as if we can administer 1,000 chemicals in one litre of water and cause one human to consume this TOXIC SOUP over a lifetime such that we can measure human health. We just don't know!" YOU - YOUR COMMUNITY - your water and sewage taxes are about to increase 300-500% for replacement water and sewage infrastructure. Once you pay this amount you obviously anticpate 'SAFE DRINKING WATER' however nobody changed the legislation or regulation. ASSUMING PERFECTION - what happens when the water operator mixes the perfect water recipe at your brand new water treatment plant that just cost your household $11,764 over 20 years and then pumps this PERFECT water into 50-100 year old buried, rusted, broken and contaminated 40 mile plus water distribution pipe system delivering this SAFE + CLEAN WATER TO YOUR HOME or business AT YOUR EXPENSE? What happens if the water operator is a criminal and says nothing about the production of ILLEGAL DRINKING WATER that he/she just allowed to be pumped to your home or business? What of the 20 town, municipal etc. public water treatment departments CONVICTED for ILLEGAL PRODUCTION OF DRINKING WATER in Ontario from January to July, 2005? [ http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/envision/news/2005/index.htm ] What of the municipal GAG ORDER that forbids the 'water operator' to advise the public of contaminated drinking water just in case someome should sue the municipality and the municipal insurance rate increases? [See cbc.ca: Winnipeg, Manitoba sewage spill 2003 + 2003]. What of the Mayor and Council or MPP or MP elected on the promise they will not raise property tax? What if your water is highly contaminated during their term in office and what if they knew this but said nothing to you or anyone? [See cbc.ca; Saskatchewan opposition reveal documents Saskatchewan government knew of contaminated water problem prior to N. Battleford, year 2001, 2600 people seriously ill - Cryptosporidium contaminated drinking water. [Cryptosporidium is NOT regulated out of Canada's drinking water therefore NOT REQUIRED to be reported as DEADLY]. {{Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1993, = 100 dead, 403,000 seriously ill, Cryptosporidium in municipal drinking water AND Health Canada states cryptosporidium is UNDER REVIEW IN 2005?? Have we got your attention yet? Certainly hope so as there are 180,000 disabled Canadian children in 2005 and this population is growing whereas it should be shrinking. ---------------------------------------------------- 30 JUNE 2005 - #1 IN A SERIES OF ARTICLES REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SEVERITY OF CANADA'S DRINKING WATER CRISIS.
